Why fabricate noise barriers from hard coated polycarbonate?

The purpose of noise protection is to reduce exposure to noise and the harm caused by noise pollution to people. The type of suitable noise protection is influenced by e.g. need for sound reduction, impact on the landscape, architectural requirements, and available space.

Why fabricate noise barriers from hard coated polycarbonate?

Growing traffic on highways and railways has increased environmental noise by causing serious noise pollution. Noise barriers reduce the noise which enters a community from a highway by absorbing, reflecting, or forcing the sound to take a longer path over and around the barriers.

A transparent noise barrier is an excellent solution when space is tight and visibility is an essential requirement. Transparent noise barriers offer a view of the environment from the road or track. In addition, transparent noise barriers reduce the shading of the yard or building. We manufacture transparent noise barriers from Aikon® PC AR 1020, hard coated polycarbonate sheets.

What is a polycarbonate noise barrier?

The polycarbonate noise barrier is an excellent transparent solution for abating noise pollution while preserving visual views along soundproofing barriers. Hard coated polycarbonate sound barriers significantly lower noise level and at the same time does not break natural views. Hard coated polycarbonate sheets can be installed on fences and other areas where they want to block out the noise. They can be affixed to wood, steel or any other material.

Polycarbonate noise barriers require low maintenance, and they have several benefits:

1. It is virtually unbreakable

Transparent noise barriers can face vandalism. Hard coated polycarbonate sheet is an almost unbreakable transparent material as its impact strength is 200 times higher compared to glass. In addition, polycarbonate does not shatter like glass and thereby it is a safer material.

2. High light transmittance

Light transmittance is an essential requirement for transparent noise barriers. Hard coated polycarbonate sheet has a high light transmittance. It is 82 % when the thickness of the PC sheet is 12 mm providing good visibility to car drivers and pedestrians.

3. Resistance to UV radiation

A transparent noise barrier must not turn yellow in a harmful way over time. Aikon® PC AR 1020 polycarbonate sheet is coated with Momentive SilFORT standard coating agent which significantly improves the UV resistance of the sheet and prevents it from yellowing.

4. Low weight

Hard coated polycarbonate sheet is an extremely lightweight material for transparent noise barriers. The density of the polycarbonate sheet is 1,2 g/cm3, weighing half as much as a glass sheet (2,5 g/cm3). Due to its low weight, hard coated polycarbonate is an energy-efficient solution that is easy to install.

Do you need help designing transparent noise barriers?

A noise barrier made of hard coated polycarbonate has many advantages, but above all, it is a safe and durable solution. Thanks to the coating, hard coated polycarbonate also have good resistance to chemicals, so noise barriers that are subject to vandalism are easy to clean with a suitable cleaning agent.
